SOCIAL CARE APPRENTICESHIPS – L2
What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above age 16, whether you are leaving school, working or thinking about a change of career. There are lots of benefits to training as an Apprentice – the training is vocationally based, which means you train whilst you are in a job, and therefore, you get paid whilst you are doing it.
To be an apprentice you need to be committed, and aware of your responsibilities to your employer – and to be able to work as part of a team.
Your training will be specific to both your needs, the needs of your employer and the requirements of the Sector Skills Council, who are responsible for designing Apprenticeship programmes relevant to each industry and in conjunction with the national minimum standards. In Health and Social Care, an Apprenticeship includes Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number, a certificate in preparing to work in Adult Social Care , as well as a Diploma Level 2 in Health and Social Care. The programme takes approximately 12 months to complete.
Your training will be undertaken by a training provider like Care Training Solutions, in conjunction and support from your employer, who will also provide you with specific in house or statutory training in respect of your role.
Why Choose to be a Social Care Apprentice?
A job in Social Care is rewarding. It is about helping people with a particular need – for example the elderly. This type of care can take place in an individual’s home or in a residential Care Home and can take many forms.
A carer is someone who looks after another person who needs help with daily living. You may find yourself helping to get someone dressed or engaging in activities. As an apprentice in Social Care, you could make a real difference to someone’s life.
You should consider a career as a Social Care Apprentice if you are: able to work with people, considerate, keen to help people maintain their dignity, able to listen and communicate effectively, are calm in difficult or new situations, able to understand the needs of others and are willing to learn and be flexible.
Prospects & Career Pathways
Apprenticeships can be demanding but they are very rewarding. Because Apprenticeships train you in the skills employers want, they give you choices in your career. When you’ve finished you can carry on working, aim for promotion and go on to higher things.
There are many different routes of career progression in Social Care. You could become a Personal Assistant, a Deputy Manager.
